When to fly in vs. when to hire local eyes. Fly for hospital discharges, hospice starts, and family meetings with attorneys or Medicaid planners. Hire or coordinate locally for medication refills, grocery runs, and handyman fixes. A geriatric care manager (private fee, but sometimes worth one month of chaos avoided) can attend appointments and report back—search “aging life care professional” in the parent’s county. For medical questions between visits, telehealth options—including free telehealth resources—can keep Mom from driving an hour with a UTI because nobody was there to notice symptoms early.
Employer reality for sandwich-generation kids. FMLA may protect your job for serious parental health needs if your employer is covered and you are eligible—HR will not volunteer details; ask in writing. Some families stagger leave so someone is on the ground quarterly even if no one can relocate. That rhythm beats heroic one-week burnout.

Video calls work better on a tablet that stays open on the kitchen table than on a phone she misplaces in a sweater pocket.
Money conversations across distance. Set a monthly fifteen-minute “finance huddle” on Zoom: unpaid bills spotted, strange credit-card charges, subscriptions she forgot. Use read-only bank alerts where possible instead of demanding full passwords. Document who paid what for home repairs—not for Medicaid games, but so one sibling does not quietly carry everything and explode later.
When siblings disagree on safety, bring a neutral third voice: her longtime physician, a social worker, or a one-hour consult with an aging life care professional. Families often fight about control when they are actually scared about liability. A written care plan with Mom’s goals at the top—“stay home until I cannot safely cook”—gives everyone something besides their fear to follow.
Keep a printed emergency sheet in Mom’s glove box and on the fridge: your numbers, poison control, her hospital preference, and allergies. Digital folders fail when the phone is locked or the battery dies. Low-tech redundancy is how far-away families sleep at night.
Holiday and hurricane seasons. Far-away kids often discover problems at Thanksgiving when Mom is thinner, quieter, or repeating stories. Build a lightweight “visit checklist”: open the medicine cabinet, glance at the checkbook, walk the bathroom with grab-bar eyes, and meet one neighbor face to face. After coastal storms or mountain ice events, call daily for a week even if she says everything is fine—power outages hide falls and spoiled insulin fast. If you cannot travel, pay for a local handyman to clear steps and confirm the heat works; that is love translated into invoice form.
